script writing for corporate video
Within corporate video and other visual communications, the development of the script is the most important element. The latest high definition cameras, professional presenters, expensive studios and fancy editing suites will not make up for a badly developed script!
The development of the script is part of the vital analysis stage of the project and is very much a collaborative process between the script writer, the client and the production team. The content of the script will be based on the preceding stages which will look at such factors as the 'problem' or 'needs' analysis, audience analysis and objective of the corporate video and related communication products. By analysing these key elements, a clear picture of the requirements is defined well before script writing starts. Failure to undertake this initial analysis could lead to a poor realisation of the objectives and a resultant corporate video that does not convey the clients key messages. The script itself comprises constructs that not only detail the messages put across via means of presentation and/or dialogue but which also assist those concerned in production to visualise the various scenes. So, as well as the narration and key messages, there will also be references to camera angles, transitions, backing music, graphical elements, etc. Despite some of the complexities, it will be a document that can be understood by all parties and referred to on a regular basis during the production of the film.
The script is a document that provides a basis for beginning production, it is not a rigid set of rules. During production, the script will often evolve to a certain extent in response to changing circumstances and new ideas that were not foreseen at the analysis stage. Storyboarding is another aid to 'visualisation' that can be used alongside the script to plan those more complex scenarios. This can be an important tool to instill confidence prior to production - often it is not until the scenes are sketched out do people have a full understanding of the different scenes involved and the processes required to capture them on film. From feature films and television commercials, to corporate videos and documentaries, script writing is the heart of the creative process and should be given number one priority within any production.
